Trach Bardo: “Ik heb geleerd dat ‘gevaar’ mensen altijd meteen aantrekt en boeit”

This WorldPride, starting on 17 July, Winq and art’otel join forces, transforming the hotel into a vibrant hub for Pride, where art, culture, creativity and the queer community come together. As part of a month long program of events, we are proud to present The Voices of Pride, a pop-up exhibition curated by Winq featuring. Erwin Venema, Dmytro Trach, Bas Kosters and Sioe Jeng Tsao.

Spread across the art gallery and lounge, the exhibition brings together artists from various disciplines and explores themes such as identity, visibility, individuality, and creative freedom. Through photography, painting, fashion, and illustration, a visual dialogue emerges that reflects the versatility of contemporary queer experiences. The exhibition serves as both a celebration and a statement: an invitation to reflect on the power of visibility and the role art plays in telling personal stories.

Trach Bardo (Dmytro Trach) is a queer painter from Vinnytsia, Ukraine, based in Amsterdam. At the heart of his practice is storytelling: he creates immersive visual worlds that invite viewers to step into the narrative and become part of it. Rather than offering fixed interpretations, his paintings remain open-ended, encouraging personal reflection and individual meaning.

His work is inspired by hospitality, Mediterranean culture, and the rituals of gathering, where everyday objects and shared spaces become stages for human connection. His paintings are bright, combining contrasting colours with expressive, rough brushstrokes. Recurring motifs such as flowers, domestic objects, and architectural elements explore themes of identity, memory, belonging, and transformation.

Shaped by his experiences as a queer Ukrainian artist and his relocation to the Netherlands, Trach Bardo explores the relationship between personal and collective stories. Through vibrant compositions and layered symbolism, he creates spaces where imagination, emotion, and lived experience intersect, inviting viewers to slow down, engage with the work, and immerse themselves in narratives that remain open to interpretation.

Tijdens WorldPride is Voices of Pride te zien in Galerie NockNock, in het Amsterdamse art'otel. De pop-up expositie, in samenwerking met Winq, toont het werk van vier queer kunstenaars. Storytelling; daar draait het om bij kunstschilder Trach Bardo (echte naam: Dmytro Trach) – afkomstig uit Oekraïne en woonachtig in Amsterdam.

Hij verzamelt verhalen tijdens zijn reizen en brengt de wereld terug naar zijn eigen kleine, veilige werkplek. Daar creëert hij een nieuwe wereld en een nieuw verhaal, gebaseerd op foto’s die hij onderweg heeft gemaakt. Een verhaal met een persoonlijke touch. “Er is altijd heel veel te zien in mijn werk en ik wil de verhalen die ik schilder openlaten voor interpretatie. Het queer aspect is niet altijd meteen herkenbaar, maar als je goed kijkt, is het er zeker.” Het hoeft er voor hem niet dik bovenop te liggen. Belangrijker is wat je er daarna mee doet. “Ik ga naar events, voer gesprekken en probeer mensen op een bepaalde manier over dingen te laten nadenken. Dat is de kracht van kunst.” 

Queerness is een onderwerp dat heel natuurlijk uit hemzelf komt. “Schilderen over bijvoorbeeld een oorlogssituatie vind ik veel moeilijker, want dat komt van een andere plek, buiten mijzelf.” Toen de oorlog uitbrak in Oekraïne, doneerde hij veel schilderijen om geld op te halen voor goede doelen. “Of het nou een film, een boek of een schilderij is: ik heb geleerd dat binnen storytelling ‘gevaar’ een onderwerp is dat mensen op de een of andere manier altijd meteen aantrekt en boeit.” Daarom is er vaak een element van gevaar terug te vinden in zijn werk. Soms letterlijk, soms door te spelen met ‘de vierde wand’, waardoor het lijkt alsof het onderwerp op het doek contact maakt met de kijker.
