Erwin Venema: “Tijdens het maken van deze serie kwam ik erachter dat het onderwerp heel persoonlijk is”

This WorldPride, starting on 17 July, Winq and art’otel join forces, transforming the hotel into a vibrant hub for Pride, where art, culture, creativity and the queer community come together. As part of a month long program of events, we are proud to present The Voices of Pride, a pop-up exhibition curated by Winq featuring. Erwin Venema, Dmytro Trach, Bas Kosters and Sioe Jeng Tsao.

Spread across the art gallery and lounge, the exhibition brings together artists from various disciplines and explores themes such as identity, visibility, individuality, and creative freedom. Through photography, painting, fashion, and illustration, a visual dialogue emerges that reflects the versatility of contemporary queer experiences. The exhibition serves as both a celebration and a statement: an invitation to reflect on the power of visibility and the role art plays in telling personal stories.

 In his work, Erwin Venema often explores gay subcultures, capturing these visually intriguing worlds with a voyeuristic gaze. His portraits are documentation as much as personal investigation, a way of examining aspects of his own identity.

The work has a documentary quality and is characterised by carefully composed images. His training in documentary photography at art school, combined with his education and assistantship under Erwin Olaf, strongly shaped his visual language. His subjects are developed with the precision and aesthetic of advertising and studio photography.

Following the death of his father, Venema began work in Berlin on the series Solitary. Initially, he was developing two seemingly separate projects: one about holding on to the transient, capturing spring before it passed, and another consisting of uncompromising portraits of men from Berlin's fetish scene. Working on both simultaneously, Solitary eventually emerged: an incisive self-portrait exploring his fears, his inclination towards solitude, and anonymity.

Tijdens WorldPride is Voices of Pride te zien in Galerie NockNock, in het Amsterdamse art'otel. De pop-up expositie, in samenwerking met Winq, toont het werk van vier queer kunstenaars. In Amsterdam staat de legendarische studio van Erwin Olaf. Er heerst nu een ogenschijnlijke rust. Fotograaf Erwin Venema, die op deze plek jarenlang stage heeft gelopen, vertelt in de stilte over zijn hang naar eenzaamheid en anonimiteit.

“Sinds mijn afstuderen fotografeerde ik heel veel fetisj, zonder zelf een fetisj te hebben,” vertelt Erwin. “Vaak ging ik samen met Erwin Olaf naar feesten. Niet om mee te doen, maar om te kijken naar de vrijheid en de anonimiteit.” Toen zijn vader overleed, begon hij aan een nieuwe serie over de lente. In Solitary komen die twee verhalen samen: de lente en de fetisj. “Tijdens het maken kwam ik erachter dat het heel persoonlijk is. Het verlies van mijn ouders, angsten en de hang naar eenzaamheid en anonimiteit.”

De beelden bestaan aan de ene kant uit bloemen, geplukt rond Amsterdam, die hij zorgvuldig heeft gedroogd en in de studio fotografeert. Aan de andere kant: mannen in hun fetisjoutfit. Rauw en eerlijk, soms meedogenloos ingeflitst en altijd onherkenbaar. “Geen modellen, maar echte mensen die ik vond via een speciale website,” zegt Erwin. “Als je de twee beelden naast elkaar ziet, dan wringt dat – waar kijk ik naar?”  

“Het belangrijkste voor mij is dat mijn werk uit mijzelf komt en dat ik ermee verder kan,” zegt Erwin. Hij heeft lang de druk gevoeld dat hij iets móést maken, maar die druk is er niet meer. Erwin was goed bevriend met Erwin Olaf. “Hij heeft me enorm geholpen met Solitary. Ik heb zelfs nog tekeningetjes van hem, die hij schetste voor de compositie toen hij in het ziekenhuis lag.” Over alles is minutieus nagedacht. Erwin Olaf was apetrots op de serie die “Kleine Erwin” – zoals Venema ook wel werd genoemd – had gemaakt. Hij zei tegen hem: “Ik word wel boos als je er uiteindelijk niets mee gaat doen.”
