Mustii shares his hotspots in Brussels

Belgian magic at the Eurovision Song Contest

Mustii will represent Belgium at the Eurovision Song Contest this year with his enchanting song Before The Party’s Over. He takes us on a musical journey to the European capital and reveals the hidden stories behind his performance of a lifetime.

Thomas Mustin, better known as Mustii, has lived in Brussels his entire life. As a 33-year-old singer, he has released two albums that both secured a spot in the top 10 of the Flemish charts. In addition to his musical achievements, he has also shone on screen in the series La Trêve and served as an expert jury member in Drag Race Belgique.

explosive number

The singer initially did not expect to be asked to participate for Belgium. "That was something I had always wanted since my childhood, but still, I was surprised. I was in the middle of filming Drag Race Belgique when the broadcaster's boss came to me to ask if I wanted to participate for Belgium. They had seen my performance on The Voice Belgique and thought I had what it takes to represent our country. I am a fan of the Song Contest, but I had to think about it for a while. Soon I knew I wanted to do it: you don't pass up such an opportunity as an artist."

choir of friends

There is something special about the song, as it features no fewer than 1,000 people from all over Europe. "But they are not all coming to Malmö, you know," he laughs. "I wanted to reflect the theme of Eurovision, which this year is United by Music, in my song. That's why friends, family, and many others join in the choir. In this way, I have all those people with me in Malmö." He was moved when he heard it for the first time in the studio. "It's very special to hear all those voices together. That way, I don't feel completely alone on the big stage."

Many of his friends are part of the queer community. He got to know them through Drag Race Belgique, where Thomas is a jury member, and the vibrant nightlife. "I like to spend time in bars like The Agenda and Cabaret Mademoiselle in Brussels," he shares. "Both bars are owned by Mademoiselle Boop, who came fourth in the first season of Drag Race Belgique and we have become good friends." He draws a lot of inspiration from the drag scene: "I have tremendous respect for the drag queens who perform both in the show and in these bars. They are fully aware of pop culture references, which inspires me greatly. They are smart, witty, funny, and dare to try new things. It's all about the freedom I sing about in my song, and I am incredibly proud to be part of that culture as a jury member on the show."

He already has a clear idea of how he will prepare himself for his time in Sweden. "I want the two parts of the song to come to life on stage as well. From the restraint to openness, flamboyant and glamorous." Exactly how that will look, we will find out on May 9th, when Mustii sings for Belgium in the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest.

Ancienne Belgique | “A music venue for Brussels that has a status comparable to that of Paradiso in Amsterdam, thanks to legendary performances by artists like Iggy Pop and Jacques Brel. I've been fortunate to play several shows here and will be on stage again in October. I vividly remember the performance by Florence and the Machine, which was quite... interesting. Truly iconic!”
